Hello friends. Namaste. Take a nice deep breath. That’s always a good thing to do, right? In this article I want to share something about heaven and hell.

For many people, heaven and hell are places somewhere in the future: a place of pure suffering or pure bliss after this life. But it is good to understand that heaven and hell can also be here and now. They are about how you experience this reality.

The same world, two completely different experiences

For some people, life right now is hell. They experience deep depression, a lot of fear, hate, anger. And for other people, in the very same world, life is beautiful. They experience joy, love and unity in every part of life. The place is the same. What is different is the state of mind and the state of the heart.

You know this from your own life. When you feel sad, you can be in the most beautiful place in the world and only feel your sadness. When you feel at peace, you can be in a stressful situation and still keep that peace inside.

Your inner state decides your direction

The energy you carry now, the state of your mind and emotions, is the direction you are moving in. If there is a lot of tension, negativity and darkness inside, it influences the choices you make, the people you attract and the situations you end up in. And if your state is open, light and loving, that also shapes your choices and the people around you.

And I believe this doesn’t stop when this body stops. This reality, this space and time, is just one tiny layer of infinite layers of creation. The spirit continues. So the state we cultivate now really matters.

Taking responsibility, without guilt

This is not about blaming yourself. Everything that came into your life is in a way a consequence of the past. But now it is your responsibility to make the best of it. You can use your past experiences to become wiser, more patient, more kind. Like that you start to create a more beautiful life, a life of light, of love, of kindness.

Three ways to bring more heaven into today

  • Start the day with your breath. Five minutes of slow, calm breathing before anything else sets the tone of your whole day.
  • Practise gratitude. Every evening, think of five things you are grateful for. It slowly rewires the brain towards what is good.
  • Clear the heart. In meditation, practise acceptance and forgiveness, for others and for yourself. Holding on to anger keeps you in a small hell of your own.

Heaven is not something you have to wait for. It is a state of being you can start to cultivate today, breath by breath.

Continue your practice

To learn to transform your inner state step by step, have a look at Awakening, my online meditation course, or 40 Days of Transformation, a daily programme to train mind and heart. All my courses are pay what you can, so everyone can learn these practices, whatever their situation.
